I smell a rat!

This morning we woke up to hear Ben knocking on our door. We had a proper shower and he wanted to use it. He had decided to leave this morning and go back home to Atlanta. He was due to leave this week anyway do he brought his flight forward. It was really sad to see him leave on such a low note. We went into town with Ben and Rob (Jon and Martyna didn’t get in until 7.30am, so they were in bed). We had breakfast, then Ben went to get his ferry. Jennifer and I wanted to leave the island as well, but missed the ferry to Koh Tao. Neither of us wanted to stay on this island any longer than we had to so we booked tickets for Koh Samui instead.

Rob, Jon, Martyna and Lillie were leaving later in the day to go to Phuket. Our ferry was at 4pm so we went back to Rob and Jon’s cabin for a bit before leaving to go to the port. Unfortunately, Jon was out when we had to leave so I never got to say Goodbye.

The ferry was packed but we were only on it for half an hour before reaching Koh Samui. We got a taxi to a resort which Jennifer had seen in the Lonely Planet book. It was basic and not so cheap but it would do. We showered and got changed and went for dinner at the resort restaurant, where there were a bunch of Brits pretending to be the big guys whilst watching golf and puffing on their cigars, being rude to the staff. Jennifer said they are what the locals call an ‘LBH’ a ‘Loser Back Home’!

We finished dinner and got a taxi into the main town area where we may as well have been on the Costa Del Sol. This place is very western and is the pure definition of ‘NAFF’. It was full of little shops and stalls that were selling tack and English bars with big screens playing the football 24 hours a day. It was really busy with 2 week tourists who were dressed up to drink in a sports bar all night. Whilst in town, we took the opportunity to call home, I spoke to Rachael for the first time since I had been away, it was great to speak to her and Jennifer booked her flight to Bangkok. The main town was not our scene at all so we got a taxi back to our cabin, which Jennifer had seen a rat in earlier. We were both on edge and agreed to find somewhere else to stay tomorrow. It was about 11pm when we went to bed.
